Ford 2.3L         

Piston, Rod, and Crankshaft specifications.

Rods:

74 – 94 all rods are the same. Length of 5.205”. Forging # D4xx The only exception is some did not have the oil squirt hole drilled. No specifics as to what year or model they were in.

95 – 97 new longer rod. Length of 5.457”. Looks like the earlier rod. Forging # F5xx

98 - 00 same length, 5.457” however thinner, lighter. #F8xx Most 95 – 97 warranty replacements were done in sets with this rod. Replacement factory 95 – 97 engines usually had this rod.

Pistons;

74 – 94 Non turbo pistons were cast flat top, small valve relief’s. Compression Height of approx 1.59”

74 – 93 Turbo pistons were forged, with a dish top. Compression Height of approx 1.59”. Some early turbo pistons were cast and flattop.

95 – 98 2.3L pistons were cast with valve reliefs. Compression Height of approx 1.330”. 5.457 Rod.

98 – 00 2.5L pistons were cast with valve reliefs. Compression Height of approx 1.192.”

Pistons for a 2.3, stroke of 3.126” and a 5.7” rod use a Compression Height of 1.09”

Pistons for a 2.5, stroke of 3.4” and a 5.7” rod use a compression height of approx .952”

All piston pins are .912” in diameter.

Crankshafts;

74 – 85 / 86 were the same 3.126 stroke-using cast in rear main oil slinger and a two-piece real seal.

86 – 88 / 89 same journal sizes with no oil slinger and used a one-piece seal.

89 – 98 2.3L crankshafts had a smaller main journal, same size rod journal with one-piece rear main seals.

98 – 00 2.5l crankshafts, longer stroke 3.4” same journal and rear main as the 89 – 98 2.3 crankshafts.
